The 0.2 percent levy will affect purchases ofwaps.

It comes at a time of high stock-market volatility, eroding brokerage margins and growing bets on an impending French stock-market slide.

French President Francois Hollande earlier tried to push for an EU-wide financial transactions tax.

Britain is deeply opposed to the idea.
